Visiting the Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis

Fasano Angra dos Reis

Recently we were lucky enough to be invited to stay at the newly opened Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis during a visit to Brazil. The hotel is the 5th Fasano property to open in Latin America following those in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Boa Vista (in the Sao Paulo countryside) and in Punta del Este in Uruguay.

Although the property is called the Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis, it’s not actually in Angra, but a little further along the coast in the small town of Frade. Frade is a small unassuming town and the hotel is located on the edge of the town as you are heading towards Paraty. Here you find a small exclusive port area which houses a number of private villas, a marina and now the newly built Hotel Fasano.

On this occasion we had rented a hire car and drove from the international airport in Rio de Janeiro to Frade. The journey is an easy one and took around 3 hours. There are lots of stops possible en-route for petrol or food. If you are coming from the other direction along the coast, then Frade is only an hour from colonial Paraty.

Immediately on arrival you know you are at a Fasano hotel. As you enter the lobby you are presented with a typically cool Fasano bar with a stylish seating area using many marine themes for decoration.

Reception is located next to the bar and you straight away receive that attentive service which epitomises the hotel. The staff are casually but stylishly dressed and escort us to our room. We had been given the best room in the hotel, the deluxe ocean view suite. It was perfect. The bed was huge plus a large seating area and a balcony which looked out on to the marina and ocean towards Ilha Grande. As with other Fasano hotels, the eye for detail was spot on. We tried to find flaws with the room, and apart from an overpriced minibar, there were none.

In the hotel, the majority of the rooms face the sea although a small number face out to the gardens.

Away from the rooms the hotel has a large spa where you will find a large heated indoor pool and separate relaxation pool with water jets and bubbles. There’s an extensive gym with many machines plus a good selection of free weights and a work out area too. There are a number of massage rooms plus a floating suite for the ultimate relaxation.

Aside from the indoor heated pool guests have access to two outdoor pools within the grounds of the hotel and also a communal pool which is shared with villa residents. The largest of the two outdoor pools is certainly a place to be seen with lots of loungers available to sunbathe on while sipping water from a freshly cut coconut or trying a caipirinha. The pool is well designed to enable you to laze on the side of the pool with your phone or tablet without them getting wet when you then jump into the water due to an excellent overflow system. The pool has a bar service and is a good spot to order some lunch.

There’s also a small pool outside the excellent kids’ club, which families will adore. The Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis works perfectly for families.

The Fasano family originally came to Brazil from Italy over a century ago and made their name in the restaurant business so it’s no surprise that the Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis features two excellent restaurants. For an informal lunch or dinner, then the Praia Restaurant is located in front of the marina and offers casual dining where many yacht owners will stroll over to grab a light snack.

The slightly more formal restaurant of Crudo takes its inspiration from the cookery of southern Italy. This is Fasano at its culinary best. You can choose from either a meat tasting menu or a fish tasting menu or simply choose from the a la carte menu. We opted for a la carte and I enjoyed a burrata with a tomato sauce, simple but divine, followed by seared tuna on a horseradish sauce and a classic tiramisu to finish. Kirsty went for the asparagus followed by a seafood tortellini. Faultless.

Set around the hotel, for the benefit of guests, villa owners and yacht owners, are a variety of shops which range a convenience store, an ice cream shop, various clothing boutiques through to estate agents and yacht brokers should you fancy splurging on a villa or boat.

While we were there I booked myself a round of golf at the Frade golf course, located inside the villas complex. The course enables you to hire equipment and a buggy, for a reasonably challenging and very scenic, 18 holes. I was paired for a round with the club captain and a yacht owner from the marina who were good company and invaluable to show me where the holes were as the course lacked a bit of signage. The concierge at the Fasano arranged the golf and can also arrange a variety of other activities, including yacht hire.

Our opinion is that the Hotel Fasano Angra dos Reis is an ideal option for couples or families looking to combine the beach with the city and is a superb luxury option.
