For our luxury hotel of the month for July, we have chosen the gorgeous Pousada Trijuncao in the remote wilderness of the Brazilian cerrado, or savannah.
Compared to the more well-publicised wildlife credentials of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, or the expansive wetlands of the Pantanal, you would be forgiven for not having heard of the cerrado. This arid region of tropical savannah surrounding Brasília and the interior states is the most bio-diverse savannah eco-system on planet earth and wildlife highlights of the region include jaguars, maned wolves, giant anteaters, pumas and tapirs.
Pousada Trijuncao is an extraordinary luxury oasis set amongst a breath-taking 33,000 hectares of protected land. Combining the charm of traditional country living with the luxurious amenities of a top-class hotel, this eco-lodge offers the discerning traveller something utterly original.
How to Get There
The lodge’s extreme remoteness is all part of the charm of the place and certainly makes for a better wildlife experience. To access Trijuncao, you fly to Brazil’s modernist capital, Brasília, which is accessible from certain international airports, as well as internally from all major cities in Brazil. From here, you can travel to the lodge by land (a scenic transfer of between five and six hours) or, for a quicker option, take a light aircraft flight to the lodge that takes only 30 minutes.
Housing just 7 rooms in total, the pousada is an intimate luxury experience. Each of the lovingly designed suites feature a king size bed, air-conditioning, luxury linens, indulgent organic Natura products and many also include a spacious living area and a private balcony. The hotel is made up of three Standard Suites, three Premium Suites and one stunning Master Suite which also includes a large bathroom with an ofuro hot tub. All of the suites masterfully blend the neutral tones of the savannah with pops of colour inspired by the vibrancy of local folklore and each room features unique handicrafts typical of the region.
Food & Drink
All meals are included at the pousada and the hotel chefs offer up a tasty range of homely dishes that blend international favourites with local specialities inspired by the produce of the region. Breakfast consists of a hearty buffet featuring ingredients from the hotel’s own farm as well as a delicious range of exotic fruits.
This charming pousada’s conservation credentials are impressive. The pousada supports a breeding centre where species that are under threat from poaching, habitat loss and climactic changes are protected, bred and re-released into the wild. In addition to this, the local NGO Onçafari who have years of experience in jaguar conservation in the Pantanal, also do the same work here, extending their scope to include the tracking and breeding of the cerrado’s most unique mammal: the maned wolf. For wildlife lovers looking to observe an incredible range of species and contribute through eco-tourism to their future prosperity; the pousada is a fantastic option.
Guests wanting an exclusive and luxurious rural retreat that also offers a premium wildlife experience off-the-beaten-track. The sheer variety of mammal and bird species that can be observed in the region is a big draw for those who are serious about ticking off some of Latin America’s most emblematic species. Currently, the cerrado is home to approximately 850 species of birds, 251 mammals, 482 reptiles and amphibians and 1,200 fish as well as 13,000 plant species (about 5% of all plant species of the world).
Must Do Activity
Your stay at Pousada Trijuncao includes a full range of fully guided excursions to explore the wild beauty of the region and its fascinating wildlife. Visiting the maned wolf conservation project during your exploration of the savannah is a must as these spectacular mammals are truly the star of the habitat. Outside of this, guests of the hotel can enjoy kayak trips on the Rio Formoso, bicycle tours, birdwatching, a visit to the Grande Sertão Veredas Park, stargazing, nocturnal alligator spotting by kayak, and an eco-safari by night.
