On a recent trip to the north-east of Brazil we visited Kenoa Resort, 40km south of Maceio in the state of Alagoas. This design hotel, tucked away from it all in the town of Barra de Sao Miguel is a must for any discerning traveller to this part of the country.
The focus is very much on design and service and there are a number of little touches that really make your stay there something special. The design is a mixture of minimalist chic and ethnic elegance, with unrendered walls and tribal decorations. Dark wood and natural stone complete what feels like a natural and authentic decoration. On arrival you are greeted by the staff and offered a welcome drink while they show you the hotel and your room.
The decorative theme carries through to each room with low beds and furniture made of thick, dark wood; again the emphasis is on local materials. The bathrooms each contain two sinks and rain showers with clear ceilings so that you can look out to the sky above you. The balcony in our room looked out both on to the sea and the marshland offering beautiful views over the countryside and out to sea. Each room has an ofuro on the balcony, a traditional wooden hot tub that always contains water. To use it, you simply top up with warm water, add some bubbles and relax listening to the sounds of the sea, preferably with a caipirinha in hand!
Kenoa Resort is situated directly on the beach. The sea in this area is quite strong, making it ideal for surfers. For those wanting a more relaxing swim, there are two eternity pools overlooking the sea. The focus is very much on relaxation here, with numerous sunbeds chairs and shaded areas around the pools. Staff are always on hand to provide extra towels and take food and drink orders.
The restaurant is excellent and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner although many guests prefer to take a light lunch in the pool area. The elevation of the restaurant allows for beautiful views over the sea and the marshland behind the hotel. In addition, there is a rooftop bar open from 4pm which is an ideal place to relax and watch the sunset with a drink.
Kenoa Resort is the perfect place to relax and do nothing however for the more adventurous there are various activities on offer. Highlights include surf lessons, snorkelling in nearby natural pools where you can see beautiful coral and fish and a visit to local oyster farms where you can catch and eat oysters fresh from the shell. The spa adds to the indulgent relaxation of this hotel and visitors will find it hard to choose between the various massages, facials and full body treatments on offer.
Kenoa Resort is situated in one of the less visited parts of Brazil, the state of Alagoas in north-east Brazil has less tourism infrastructure but is stunningly beautiful. This makes it well worth a visit; the remoteness and windswept coastline combined with luxury and design make Kenoa Resort a must on any tailor made trip to Brazil.
