Looking to hopefully see one of the most elusive big cats in the world? Then look no further as this Brazil holiday may be for you. Focussing on the northern Pantanal and the river Pixaim this itinerary gives you the best possible chance of seeing jaguars on a holiday to Brazil. You will spend two whole days in search of this beautiful creatures whilst also experiencing the vast array of other wildlife the area has to offer. The itinerary also includes a visit to Rio de Janeiro, the most visually beautiful city in the world and a must for any first time visitor to Brazil.
Fly to Rio de Janeiro tp start your Brazil holiday where upon arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Flights to Rio from Europe generally arrive either in the early morning or late in the evening. The remainder of the day will be free for you to relax.
The Porto Bay Hotel has a great location and offers three room types; superior, deluxe and suites, all of which are immaculately presented and either have views of the bay or of the city. The restaurant in the hotel offers fabulous food but also a wonderful panoramic view over Copacabana beach whereas the Bar Limone is the perfect spot for a caipirinha or for a bit of dancing. Everyone will love the rooftop. Complete with pool and bar with superb views of Sugar Loaf and Copacabana beach this is a great place to spend a few hours, lazing in the sun or sipping cocktails as the sun goes down.
After breakfast you will be met by your private English speaking guide and depart for Corcovado to see the most famous of all images of Rio, the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The views from the top are breathtaking and make you realise why Rio is considered by many as the most beautiful city in the world. The afternoon will be then free for you to explore independently or relax on the beach.
This morning is at your leisure. Relax on one of the city’s many beaches, explore the historic centre, meander round the cobbled streets of Santa Teresa or amble around the Botanical gardens. The city has ample to keep you entertained for many a day. After a morning of exploring the historical centre perhaps treat yourself to high tea amidst the opulent elegance of the Confeitaria Colombo.
After lunch you will head off to explore Sugar Loaf Mountain. This granite rock is an iconic Rio landmark and from the top you’ll once again have the most wonderful views of the whole city, it’s beaches and a breathtaking view of Guanabara Bay. It’s a great place to watch the sun set over the city, sipping a caipirinha. The evening will then be free for you to relax.
Today you will be transferred back to the airport for a morning flight to Cuiabá in the heart of the northern Pantanal. On arrival you will be met by a private driver and taken on a safari transfer to Porto Jofre. It’s a fabulous safari along the entire Transpantaneira Park Road, with several opportunities to photograph nature and wildlife. Arrive later in the afternoon and you will enjoy dinner at the Hotel. During your time at the hotel all meals are included.
The Porte Jofre Hotel is located in one of the most fascinating regions of the Pantanal. During this period there is a great opportunity to observe the largest variety of birds, caimans, capybaras, pumas, emus, deer and much more. The hotel was designed especially for those who are looking to fish in the Pantanal, the decoration and comfort are very basic, but due to its location it has been used as a support base for the observation of Jaguars. There are 28 rooms, all equipped with air-conditioning, a private bathroom with hot water, a television and a mini-bar. The hotel also provides a swimming pool, wi-fi internet access and a restaurant that serves regional cuisine.
Over the next two days you will enjoy four half-day boat trips each morning and afternoon to maximize chances of spotting jaguars. The region between the Cuiabá and Piquiri rivers hold the State Park “Encontro das Águas”, in which live a high concentration of jaguars. Most of those cats are quite used to boat traffic and people. The meeting of those rivers offer exceptionally good fishing and the influx of fishermen has enabled jaguars to be spotted more easily. The best way to meet these enigmatic creatures is by boat, cruising at low speed along the rivers border, searching in the tree shadows and empty beaches for signs of them, as well as other rare wild life as ocelots and giant river otters, among others. You will depart early in the morning, have the option to return to the Lodge for lunch and rest, and restart later in the afternoon searching until sundown.
The morning is free to explore the area and an optional boat trip looking for jaguars. Then after lunch you will drive along the Tranpantaneira toward Araras Ecolodge. Check in, have an introduction tour, enjoy dinner and spend the night at the Lodge.
The Araras Eco-lodge offers the most comfortable possible accommodation in the northern Pantanal in incredible surroundings. A stay at the lodge offers numerous activities with some wonderful walks on offer throughout the property on raised boardwalks above the wetlands. The lodge, built in regional rustic style, offers 19 comfortable rooms with air conditioning with screened windows, ceiling fans, private bathrooms (cold and hot shower); a swimming pool with an adjoining covered area for meals, large verandas with hammocks, reading room and gift shop, bar, and restaurant.
During the next two days you will enjoy a number of activities, two during the day and one at night (daily) which will include walking tours, photo safaris, night safaris and canoe trips. You will see a wide variety of wildlife and birdlife, hopefully including the elusive jaguar. All excursions are led by bilingual guides who have a deep knowledge of local nature and regional culture.
Following a transfer to the airport in Cuiabá, today you will wave goodbye to Brazil and board a flight back to the UK after what will have been an unforgettable Brazil holiday.
Hotel Porto Jofre is only open from March to October, but the best period to observe the Jaguar is from end of June to end of October.
