Manaus is the largest city in the Amazon and the gateway to the river and the jungle. Lying on the banks of the famous river near the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimoes, Manaus is the primary destination for those wishing to experience the sights and sounds of the Amazon.
From Manaus a number of Amazon river cruises begin and it is from here you can head to a variety of different jungle lodges. On many trips to the Amazon it may be necessary to spend a night in the city due to flight connections.
The city is a pleasant enough city to visit in its own right for a couple of days with the historic centre having been recently refurbished and offering a number of interesting buildings and markets to visit. A trip to the river front is also a must to see the vast number of boats moored by the harbour.
It’s a great destination to be able to mix jungle exploration, river cruises or tree climbing for the adventurous in a year round tropical climate on a Brazil holiday.
