Brazil is the perfect destination for a family holiday due to its diversity and there are numerous options ideal for children and parents alike all over the country. This itinerary combines the stunning city of Rio de Janeiro where jeep tours through Tijuca Forest to the top of Corcovado will excite the children before you fly north to the Amazon where you will see the amazing natural spectacle of the Meeting of the Waters before spending 4 nights in a jungle lodge. Finish with 4 nights in colonial Paraty, set between Atlantic rainforest and the sea, with lot of activities.
Fly to Rio de Janeiro where upon arrival you will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Flights to Rio from Europe generally arrive either in the early morning or late in the evening. The remainder of the day will be free for you to relax.
The Porto Bay Hotel has a great location and offers three room types; superior, deluxe and suites, all of which are immaculately presented and all have views of the ocean. The restaurant in the hotel offers fabulous food but also a wonderful panoramic view over Copacabana beach whereas the Bar Limone is the perfect spot for a caipirinha or for a bit of dancing. Everyone will love the rooftop. Complete with pool and bar with superb views of Sugar Loaf and Copacabana beach this is a great place to spend a few hours, lazing in the sun or sipping cocktails as the sun goes down.
After breakfast you will be met by your private English speaking guide and depart for Corcovado to see the most famous of all images of Rio, the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The views from the top are breathtaking and make you realise why Rio is considered by many as the most beautiful city in the world.
This afternoon you will head off to explore Sugar Loaf Mountain. This granite rock is an iconic Rio landmark and from the top you’ll once again have the most wonderful views of the whole city, its beaches and a breathtaking view of Guanabara Bay. It’s a great place to watch the sun set over the city.
Following a private transfer to the airport, today you will fly to the heart of the Amazon, to the city of Manaus. On arrival you will be collected by an English speaking driver and taken to your hotel of choice for the night before your Amazon exploration begins tomorrow.
The Hotel Tropical is the most luxurious hotel in Manaus. A large hotel complex on the banks of the Rio Negro, it is luxuriously equipped to the highest standards. The hotel offers seven different room sizes depending on your needs from standard rooms through to a presidential suite complete with contemporary or colonial décor. All rooms feature air-conditioning, free wi-fi, cable TV, minibar and an electronic safe. The location of the hotel is ideal and is perfect for a one night stay as has a huge array of facilities including a coffee shop, a pharmacy, two restaurants, three bars, a shopping mall, a nursery, jewellery shop and even a nightclub
This morning you will be met by a guide and depart for Juma Lodge. The trip takes three hours via speed boat, van and speed boat again. During your trip you might encounter some pink dolphins on the way and you will stop to see the amazing Meeting of the Waters, the spot where the muddy waters of the Solimões River and the black waters of the Negro River run side by side, without mixing, to form the great Amazonas River. All meals are included at the lodge.
In the afternoon, we leave for a canoeing activity, which is a reconnaissance tour through the igarapés (Amazonian creeks) and the igapós (flooded forest), made in paddle canoes. During the trip you can swim and may encounter some pink dolphins.
Return to the Juma Amazon Lodge. At night we go out in a canoe to observe the night fauna and meet alligators, frogs and birds. At some point, the guide will direct his flashlight towards the banks of the river: you will be looking straight at the eyes of an alligator. The light beam hypnotizes it, which facilitates the capture of the animal by our experienced guide. After you have had a chance to see it, the animal is returned to the river, unharmed
Pousada Picinguaba lies 30 minutes south of the colonial town of Paraty in a relatively isolated location but it is that location that makes this hotel so very special. The hotel faces the sea and a 3-km long secluded beach. Inside the hotel there are 9 deluxe rooms, one suite and also a private villa and all the accommodation opens out to either the natural surroundings or the sea. Each room has a private balcony and hammock and all the rooms are designed with simplicity in mind. All are without TV, telephone or internet to provide you with that total escape from the outside world and the totally relaxing break you deserve.
Early in the morning we will leave for a sunrise excursion, witnessing the transformation of the sky and listening to the sights and sounds of the waking birds. The guides are trained and equipped with binoculars to complement this experience with bird watching.
Breakfast with typical fruits and regional food the leave for a jungle hike. In this educational jungle walk. our expert guide will introduce you to the Amazon’s wildlife, showing you plants that are edible, medicinal, and useful for many other purposes. Exploration walks are constantly changed to avoid damaging the forest through overuse. Return to the lodge for lunch.
After lunch, we will do a tour around the Juma Amazon Lodge, where you will have the chance to see the lodge, completely built on stilts, from a different perspective: from the bottom. It is a very interesting way to understand the lodge’s construction. The tour is organized by boat (in the flood season) or walking (in the dry season). Later in the afternoon we will board a motor boat with a guide to fish and find out more about the well-known piranha and also other Amazonian fishes. While enjoying the sunset, return to Juma. Dinner will be complemented by the fish you caught earlier, cooked the Amazon way. Later, be part in a lecture conducted by one of our guides about the Amazon life.
After breakfast head out on a hike and, after that, we will stop at a pleasant spot in the forest to eat lunch (regional cuisine baked over a fire) and rest in hammocks, as the natives do. In the afternoon, we will visit a house of a local native to learn more about their fascinating culture. A native will impart his knowledge about traditional medicine plants and demonstrate how manioc flour, the main economic resource in the region, is prepared. We will also have the opportunity to see how latex is extracted from a rubber tree (rubber was responsible for the economic boom at the end of the 19th century).
After breakfast we will visit a gigantic Sumaúma tree that is approximately 300 years old. The Sumaúma tree is recognized as the biggest tree species in height and diameter in the Amazon, reaching up to 40 metres high (130 feet). We will return to the lodge and have lunch. During the afternoon, on the deck at Juma, one of our guides will teach you some local craft, such as making objects from babaçu leaves, açaí seeds, fish scales and other sources.
This morning you will be transferred back to Manaus for a flight back to Rio de Janeiro.
Upon arrival in Rio de Janeiro you will be met by a private driver to head south along the coast to the beautiful colonial town of Paraty when you can spend the next four nights.
The Porto Imperial Pousada is located in the historical centre of Paraty, amongst colonial buildings and the cobble-stone streets. All 44 rooms and 3 suites are furnished in a colonial style, with clean colours and a cozy style. Following a private transfer to Rio de Janeiro international airport, today you will wave goodbye to Brazil and board a flight back to the UK after what will have been an unforgettable Brazil holiday.
